Karwa Chauth Thali Set: What It Has and How to Arrange It
What a Karwa Chauth thali set contains, what the thali, chalni, karwa and diya are for, how to arrange it, steel vs brass, care and when to order.

What is in a Karwa Chauth thali set?
A Karwa Chauth thali set holds everything used in the evening pooja and at moonrise: a pooja thali, a chalni (sieve) for seeing the moon, a karwa or lota for water, small bowls for roli and rice, and a diya. A matching set keeps all of it on one plate.
Karwa Chauth is a fast that many married women in North India keep from sunrise until the moon is seen. The customs differ from one family and region to another, so treat this guide as a general outline and follow what the elders in your family do.
What does each piece in the set do?
Each piece has one job in the pooja, and knowing it makes the thali easy to arrange. This is how most families use them:
- Thali: the main plate. It carries the diya, the bowls, sweets and flowers, and is held during the katha and the aarti.
- Chalni (sieve): by custom, the woman looks at the moon through it when it rises, and then at her husband.
- Karwa or lota: the small pot that gives the festival its name. It holds the water that is offered to the moon, and many families use the same water to break the fast.
- Small bowls (katori): for roli or kumkum and for rice (akshat). Some families keep sindoor or a sweet in the second bowl.
- Diya: the lamp for the aarti.
What does the Bhintika Karwa Chauth thali set include?
The Bhintika set has six pieces: one thali, one chalni, one karwa (a lota-shaped water pot), two small bowls and one diya. The main thali is 11 inches across. That measurement is for the thali only.
The set is steel and it is decorated by hand. The pieces are red, with yellow line work and small stone accents, and the thali has a swastik motif in the centre. Because the decoration is done by hand, two sets are never exactly the same, and yours can differ a little from the photo. It is part of our Metal Decor collection.
How do you arrange a Karwa Chauth thali?
Place the diya in the centre or towards the front of the thali, the two bowls beside it, and the karwa on the side of the hand you pour with. Keep the chalni next to the thali, not on it, so nothing tips over when you lift the plate.
- Wipe every piece with a dry cloth and lay a clean cloth on the pooja spot.
- Fill one bowl with roli or kumkum and the other with rice.
- Put a cotton wick and a little ghee in the diya. Light it only when the pooja begins.
- Fill the karwa with clean water just before the pooja, not hours earlier.
- Add the sweet or mathri, a few flowers and anything else your family keeps, such as sindoor or bangles.
- Carry the thali with both hands. On the terrace, put it on a flat surface before you pick up the chalni.
If you make a small rangoli at the pooja spot, ready rangoli colours and combo kits save time on a day when you are fasting.
Is a steel thali set as good as a brass one?
Yes, for most homes. Both metals are used for pooja, and the choice comes down to cost, care and family custom. Here is a plain comparison:
- Steel. Cost: lower. Care: does not tarnish and needs no polishing. Look: plain steel is silver in colour, and a decorated set is covered in colour.
- Brass. Cost: higher. Care: tarnishes and needs polishing with lemon, tamarind or a brass cleaner. Look: warm golden and very traditional. A brass thali is usually heavier to hold.
If your family has always used brass or silver for this fast, keep to that. If there is no fixed custom, a decorated steel set is a practical choice.
How do you care for a hand-decorated steel thali set?
Dry-wipe only. Use a clean, soft, dry cloth, and do not wash, soak or scrub the pieces. Plain steel can go in the sink, but paint and stones that are applied by hand can loosen with water and rubbing.
- After the pooja, empty the karwa and wipe it dry inside and outside at once.
- Let the diya cool, then wipe away the ghee with a dry cloth or tissue.
- Brush off kumkum and rice with a dry cloth. Do not rinse the bowls.
- Store the set wrapped in a soft cloth, in its box, in a dry cupboard. Do not stack heavy vessels on it.
When should you order a Karwa Chauth thali set?
Order about two weeks before this year's Karwa Chauth. Bhintika dispatches orders in 3 to 5 business days, and the courier needs a few more days after that. The shipping policy has the details.
The date changes every year, because the fast falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the month of Kartik. Check a calendar or panchang for this year's date and the moonrise time in your city.
- Payment is prepaid only. There is no cash on delivery.
- Shipping is free on orders of ₹999 or more, and ₹40 below that.
- We do not take returns. Open the parcel as soon as it arrives. If a piece is damaged or the wrong item was sent, report it within 48 hours with photos for a refund, as the returns policy explains.
Frequently asked questions
What is in a Karwa Chauth thali set?
A Karwa Chauth thali set usually has a pooja thali, a chalni (sieve), a karwa or lota for water, small bowls and a diya. The Bhintika set has six pieces: one thali, one chalni, one karwa, two small bowls and one diya.
What is the chalni used for on Karwa Chauth?
By custom, the woman keeping the fast looks at the moon through the chalni when it rises, and then looks at her husband through it. After that she offers water to the moon and breaks her fast.
Is a steel thali set fine for Karwa Chauth, or should it be brass?
Both are used. Brass is the older choice and looks golden, but it costs more and needs polishing. Steel costs less and does not tarnish. Follow your family custom if it prefers one metal.
How do I clean a hand-decorated thali set?
Wipe it with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Do not wash, soak or scrub it, because water and rubbing can loosen the decoration and the stones.
When should I order a Karwa Chauth thali set?
Order about two weeks before this year's Karwa Chauth. Bhintika dispatches in 3 to 5 business days and the courier needs a few more days after that.
A Karwa Chauth thali set is simple once you know what each piece is for: the thali carries the pooja items, the karwa holds the water, the chalni is for the moon and the diya is for the aarti. Order early, and wipe it dry after the pooja so it is ready for next year.
