Diwali Entrance Decoration Ideas for Indian Homes
Eight Diwali entrance decoration ideas for Indian homes and flats: toran, welcome hanging, rangoli, diyas and lights, with heights and safety tips.

How do you decorate the home entrance for Diwali?
Decorate a Diwali entrance in five layers: a toran across the top of the door frame, a welcome or door hanging at eye level, a rangoli on the floor to one side, diyas or lights along the edges, and a clean doorway with no clutter. With all five done, even a plain flat door looks festive.
The main door is the first thing guests see, and in many families it is where the Lakshmi Puja preparations begin. You do not need a big budget for these Diwali entrance decoration ideas. You need a plan, a clean door and about two hours.
What should you do before you start decorating?
Clean the door and clear the floor first, because decoration on a dusty door looks untidy. Do this a day or two before Diwali.
- Wipe the door, frame, bell and nameplate with a damp cloth, then dry them.
- Move shoes into a rack or inside the house. Leave one door mat only.
- Replace a weak bulb outside the door. A warm white bulb makes colours look better at night.
- Find the nearest plug point before you buy string lights.
- In an apartment, ask about society rules for diyas and decorations in common areas.
8 Diwali entrance decoration ideas
Start at the top of the door and work down to the floor. That order stops dust and petals from falling on a finished rangoli.
1. Toran or bandhanwar on the door frame
Hang the toran along the top of the door frame, high enough that it does not brush people as they walk in. Fresh marigold flowers and mango leaves are the traditional choice. A fabric or bead toran lasts through the whole festive week.
2. Welcome hanging at eye level
Hang a welcome sign or door hanging at eye level, about 5 feet from the floor, on the door or on the wall beside it. On a door that is used all day, the wall is better because the piece does not swing each time the door opens. Bhintika has UV-printed MDF welcome and door hangings made for this spot.
3. Rangoli to one side of the door
Place the rangoli to one side of the door, on the patch of floor where feet do not land. In a flat, a design of 1 to 1.5 feet across is enough. Our guide to Diwali rangoli ideas for small homes has seven designs for tight spaces.
4. Diyas in pairs or in a row
Put diyas in pairs on both sides of the door, or in a row along the wall. Keep them at least 1 foot away from curtains, paper lanterns and the door mat, and do not leave them lit when no one is at home. A small plate under each diya saves the floor from oil marks.
5. String lights around the frame
Run warm white or yellow string lights along the door frame or the balcony grill. Fix them with removable hooks or tape, not nails. Keep plugs and joints away from rain and wet floors.
6. Kandil or paper lantern
Hang one lantern above or beside the door, high enough that a tall guest does not hit it, roughly 6.5 feet or more from the floor. In a narrow corridor, one good lantern looks better than three small ones.
7. Plants and flowers
Two matching pots, one on each side of the door, give a tidy and balanced look. If floor space is short, keep a bowl of water with floating petals on a stool.
8. Evil eye or auspicious hanging
Many families hang an evil eye, hamsa or shubh labh piece near the main door as a traditional sign of protection and good wishes. This is a matter of belief and custom, so follow what your own family does.

How high should you hang door decorations?
Hang door and wall pieces with their centre about 5 feet from the floor, and hang torans on the top of the frame. Use this quick guide.
- Toran: along the top of the door frame, clear of people's heads.
- Welcome sign or door hanging: centre at about 5 feet from the floor.
- Nameplate: beside the door at eye level, on the latch side.
- Lantern: about 6.5 feet from the floor or higher.
- Diyas and rangoli: on the floor, outside the swing of the door.
How do you decorate a small flat entrance?
Use the wall and the door, not the floor. In a narrow corridor, choose one toran, one door hanging and a small corner rangoli or a thali rangoli. Skip floor pots if the passage is less than 3 feet wide. Keep the staircase, the lift area and your neighbour's door clear.
How do you care for MDF door hangings?
Keep MDF pieces dry and wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. MDF is an engineered wood board, and the designs on Bhintika pieces are UV-printed, which means digitally printed on the surface. They suit indoor walls and covered entrances. Do not hang them where rain falls directly, and do not wash them with water. The same care applies to printed MDF wall decor inside the house.
What does it cost and when should you order?
A basic setup of toran, door hanging, diyas and rangoli fits a small budget, because much of it is flowers and things you already own. Bhintika prices run from about ₹199 to ₹1,500. Orders are prepaid only, with free shipping at ₹999 and above and ₹40 below that. Dispatch takes 3 to 5 business days, and the courier needs a few more days after that, so order at least two weeks before Diwali.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of the door should the rangoli be on?
The side with more free floor, where people do not step. Keep it outside the swing of the door.
Can I light diyas in an apartment corridor?
Check your society rules first. If it is allowed, keep diyas on plates, away from mats and curtains, and put them out before you sleep or leave the house.
What is hung on the main door for Diwali?
Most homes hang a toran on the door frame. Many also add a welcome sign, shubh labh symbols or an evil eye hanging. These are customs and they vary by family and region.
Can MDF door hangings be used outside?
Yes, under a covered entrance or in an indoor corridor. They should not be kept in direct rain or on a wall that stays damp.
How early should I start decorating the entrance?
Clean the entrance two days before Diwali and fix lights and wall pieces a day before. Make the rangoli and add fresh flowers on Diwali morning.
Work from the top of the door to the floor, keep the walkway clear and stop once the five layers are done. For the eye-level piece, see the Home Entrances range, and for the floor, the rangoli colours and combo kits.
